Its just another random topic. Who do you respect the most? Rather, which profession do you respect the most?
For me, I think the greatest people who some way or another changed my life would be teachers/lecturers and of course, my mummy.
Well, catagorising mothers as a profession would be rude. But the amount of responsibility that they carry to raise a child is tremendous. To all educators who are mums, I give my greatest respect to you. I salute you for all the things that you've done.
Lets put ourselves in the shoes of a mother. Raising a child from birth is not an easy task. NO JOKE man. Be it money-wise, time spent and labour pains, its the responsibility that I really admire. I mean, life-long responsibilty?! No way for me.
To add to that, we kids still complain, argue and sometimes fight with our parents. I believe the main reason for all these its because we somehow set an expectation for them. And when that expectation is not met, we question the obvious.
I used to argue with my mom, telling her that she is UNFAIR and UNREASONABLE. But her one sentence shut me up. "There isn a need for me to be reasonable. I am your mother."
Haha! Sounds unreasonable to you? Nah... Because of this word. Trust. I trusted and believed that she will mould me to a reasonably work-smart person. All their efforts put in is to mould us to a better person. Someone who is READY to go into the workforce and able to lead a decent life thereafter. I think thats what life really is about.
Another thing point I want to bring up is that all of us are still in a process of learning. We children are learning to become an adult, and parents are still learning to become a BETTER parent for us. Newly weds learning to change baby diapers; young parents learning how to scold a child without going beyond the limit; learning to let go and squeeze a little portion of freedom for the child bit by bit; learning to understand the child better; learning to be a grandmother. and the cycle goes on and on.
As a child, we were and STILL are given UNLIMITED chances from our parents, but do we in return give them just one chance? No! Many of us think that they HAVE TO BE right because their are our parents. But truly, nope. We should give them a chance to learn too!
Next up. Teachers.
I never knew how to appreciate teachers till I was in secondary school. In the past, I could never understood why teacher's day existed, but now, I take that very special day as an opportunity to really thank them.
Someone once told me this: "In terms of profession politics, teachers' politics is one of the worst!"
How true.
To me, teachers are somehow like students, only harder and harsher. They do not have the '2nd chance' we have. They can't really bitch nor gossip about their collegues/superiors like we always do. They can't say 'No' when given a task to do. We can plead and beg teachers and somehow get our way. And when they fail to submit their 'homework', it's doom day. For students like us, we still can afford to say 'tomorrow'. For them? No! That's working life I guess. Also. We (students) are considered equal in class. When we step into school, we generally do not need to take 'orders' from anyone. But teachers have various positions and these positions gives them the authority to lead and disseminate assignments. Through the years, they climb this bloody, ominous dark ladder. One step at a time.
As a kindergarden teacher, you are responsible for the fundermentals and the social side of the child. You play, scold and teach. Patient is of the essence.
As a primary school teacher, as this is a stage where children starts to tell lies, starts to get a taste of rebellation and the stress. You counsel, understand and share. Communication and understanding is of the essence.
As a secondary school/JC teacher, you take on the responsibilty as a 2nd-parent. You not only teach them, but try to shape their future. You assist them on their way, walking side by side. Some slower, some faster. Motivation is of the essence.
As a Polytechnic teacher/lecturer, you take the role as a really experience senior. A little more informal, outspoken and fun. Teaching them the Dos and Don't of life. Not really walking beside them, but giving them the chance to make a decision either to turn left or to turn right. But when they accidentally walk the wrong way, you step in and help them make a U-turn.
As a University lecturer/professor, you make them?... TALLER.
Therefore, to all mothers and teachers all over the world, I truly truly give you my greatest respect and admiration. I salute you. Thank you very much.
Oh! LOVE YA MRS YEO! :D
